Paolo Ulian and the matchstick

We don't really care whether Paolo Ulian is or isn't the best designer around. We do care though when he surprises us with his projects, stuns us with that usual idea that seems to be out there for anyone to grab, so simple, not complicated, but only he manages to grasp it and transform the object he tampers with into a touch of genius.

There are constellations of objects whose longevity seems to have granted them untouchability, privileged them with this title, for ever. Nobody would dare to think of changing such an object, not even by an inch.
Thats why Double Match seems perfect. Once again Ulian succeeded in hitting the target. He modified a matchstick, an object untouched for 200 years. This time around everyone, the businessman, my grandma, the kid, the worker, the very cool designer, the artist and the architect; everyone, would agree. Add to that a series of considerations regarding the issue of waste and Ulian's attention for little lost habits (the grandmas that never threw away anything and that used the same matchstick more than once), add a pinch of his genius, and you have a perfect project: DOUBLE MATCH.

p.s. If anyone should think: "Well, I could've done it myself!", then think of Munari that says you could at best attempt to redo it, since Ulian already did it.
